As a show of support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s CNG initiative aimed at providing cheaper and cleaner fuel alternatives to all Nigerians, Dangote Cement Plc has made significant investments of over US$280 million in compressed natural gas technology and infrastructure (CNG).

President Tinubu, whose commitment to the deployment of CNG and clean energy in Africa is unparalleled, has maintained his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for private sector investment and expanding Nigeria’s CNG infrastructure to improve energy efficiency and economic growth to boost. As part of this initiative, he ordered the distribution of 1 million free CNG conversion kits for commercial vehicles that transport people, food and goods.

At a recent event, the President stressed the urgent need for Nigeria to utilize its vast natural gas resources in the transportation sector. He explained that CNG transportation is an economic imperative for Nigeria, signaling a significant shift in the country’s approach to public transport and energy use.

“Using natural gas to power Nigeria’s transportation industry is the next path,” he explained.

For its part, Dangote Cement said the investment of over US$280 million not only consolidates its leadership position in the CNG sector but also reflects its commitment to mitigating climate change and supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Arvind Pathak, group managing director of Dangote Cement Plc, said the investment was aimed at acquiring 100 percent CNG trucks as part of a long-term plan to convert the entire fleet to CNG.

This move represents an important milestone in Dangote’s transition to clean energy, with the aim of running the majority of its fleet on CNG by mid-2026. In October, the company received the first batch of 1,500 mono-fuel CNG trucks and expects an additional 1,600 CNG trucks; a total of 3,100 by the end of the year.

Pathak said, “Dangote Cement aims to operate a predominantly CNG-powered fleet by mid-2026. To facilitate this transition, we are investing in expanding our CNG fueling infrastructure, ensuring our growing fleet has reliable access to CNG fuel.”

He said plans are underway to aggressively advance this rollout schedule starting in the first quarter of 2025. “We are keeping our eye on the ball to ensure we do not miss our target dates for full compliance,” he added.

Pathak said the company’s CNG infrastructure investments had positively impacted Nigeria’s transition to cleaner fuels. He added that the CNG filling station in Obajana, which can refuel over 3,000 trucks, is an example of this commitment. A second filling station is currently being built in Ibese to further support fleet operations.

Aliko Dangote, President/CEO of Dangote Group, said the company’s investment in CNG was also in line with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, which aims for net zero emissions by 2060.

“In this pursuit of clean energy transition, we are optimistic that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will deliver a remarkable achievement as he has taken the lead in the country’s energy efficiency efforts. This requires private sector intervention to support this noble idea initiated by the President,” Dangote added.

He noted that the company’s early adoption of CNG has made it the largest operator of CNG trucks in Nigeria, stressing that the initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s ambition to strengthen the country’s energy independence and contribute to a more secure energy future give a boost.

According to him, “We are now using CNG vehicles, especially with the new Federal Government policy launched under the Renewed Hope Agenda by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.” We are committed to a cleaner and greener future a.“
